Reality TV Breeds Reality Advertising?

Living in New York, aka the Pizza Capital of the World, often (or usually) when the name “Domino’s” is mentioned there’s a good amount of snickering, if not an all out LOL. In fact, if you really stop to think about it, it’s amazing the pizza chain is still in existence at all. So this brings me to . . . have you seen the new commercials to kick of their 50th anniversary? Don’t you just want to go and order one tonight, maybe in secret, when nobody else is around? How could you not. The new tactic launched by Dominos, the “Why We Suck” campaign (sorry, it’s really “Oh Yes We Did”), is probably the boldest campaign I’ve seen in a long time. No catchy copy, no mottos like “it’s not delivery, its DiGiorno,” just regular people talking about how awful Dominos pizza is. You get a good laugh and you get to see somebody like yourself with whom you’re in total agreement. No actors, no scripts, just the Dominos head chefs telling you how they’ve improved their pizza and the incentives they’re offering to try it again. They even have a live Twitter feed on their website devoted solely to this effort. Just like Sitcom vs Reality TV, it looks more and more like Reality commercials and advertising are becoming the wave of the future. Being an actor in my former life, I’m not sure I’m liking this at all; it just means less work for everyday actors in an industry that’s already struggling. What’s your take on this?

Are you being more “entertained” by the everyday person in commercials or do you want your professional 30 second storylines back?
